Prospective Students, University of Illinois at Chicago

UIC's Biomedical and Health Information Sciences prepares students for cutting-edge roles at the forefront of the health care arena.

The department unites four academic programs that are among the best in the country: Biomedical Visualization, Biomedical and Health InformaticsHealth Informatics, and Health Information Management.

The field of biomedical and health information science is about the creation of information and its transformation to knowledge, facilitating the delivery of health care.

Biomedical Visualization

Founded in 1921 by Professor Thomas Smith Jones, the Biomedical Visualization program (BVIS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago is the second oldest accredited school of its kind and one of only four accredited graduate programs in North America providing professional training for careers in the visual communication of life science, medicine, and healthcare. With a renowned faculty and a curriculum that keeps pace with advances in science and technology, UIC's Biomedical Visualization program attracts graduate students from a variety of disciplines such as medicine, life science, art, sculpture, digital animation, and computer science.

Biomedical and Health Informatics

The PhD in Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI) program at UIC prepares future academicians and health care industry leaders to advance the discovery and application of new ideas that enable complex decision-making and promote the introduction of health information technology. Today's decision-making is increasingly driven by data and collaborative practice, while health information technology is simultaneously productive and disruptive. This program is structured to be delivered face-to-face, full-time, using an extensive mentorship model. It is contemporary in terms of technology-based learning, with a small number of courses delivered online or in a blended model.

Health Informatics

UIC offers two distinct online options for prospective students interested in advanced health informatics education: Online Master of Science in Health Informatics and Online IBHE Post-Master’s Certificate. Our health informatics program was the first in the country to focus on the social and organizational issues affecting information technology in health care, the first accredited graduate level informatics program (by CAHIIM) in the country, and is now the largest program of its kind.

Health Information Management

HIM professionals are experts in managing patient health information, medical records, administering information systems, managing the diagnoses and procedures coding process for healthcare services provided to patients. Graduates of our Health Information Management programs are eligible to register for the national credential examination, Registered Health Information Administrators (RHIA), offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). All programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM).

UIC offers the following Health Information Management programs: Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (online or on-campus) and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (Graduate-level) in Health Information Management (online).
