Grupo SALTO’s “Moving Forward” banquet in memory of Dr. Elina Manghi

You are cordially invited to attend and support Grupo SALTO’s annual fundraiser in memory of Dr. Elina Manghi.

Come and enjoy Grupo SALTO’s teenagers and young adults showcasing their talent in music, dance and painting, and a performance by the Mexican Folk Dance Company.

Proceeds from the event will be used to sponsor out of High School, college and graduated students with high functioning autism for job training and mentoring others on the spectrum.  Support Grupo SALTO and help young adults increase an employment opportunity for their self-sufficiency.

Grupo SALTO is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for families who have children with a disability, focusing on Autism, and whose primary language is Spanish. The main purpose of the group is to train, inform, provide resources, education, and support for parents and their children (Learn more at: http://gruposalto.org).

Moving Forward – Hacia Adelante
Grupo SALTO’s accomplishments and collaborations will be highlighted including:

• Tú y Yo (Child to Child) Program
  The impact obtained through a program based on the international concept of “Child to Child” in which young adults with high-functioning autism publicly presented an outline of autism seen through their eyes and based on their own experiences.
• Promotoras de Salud / Parents Taking Action
  The results of a study developed by Dr. Sandy Magaña in which a group of mothers received training to test the effectiveness of the curriculum.  The program first sponsored by a TAP Grant and continued by the UIC Institute on Disability and Human Development prepared the participants to speak, make recommendations and educated families with a child or children within the Autism Spectrum.

IN MEMORIAM

Elina Manghi, Psy.D., was the TAP (The Autism Program) co-director at the UIC Developmental Disabilities Family Clinics. Previously, she had been one of the DHD faculty, and the clinical director of the Family Clinics. Dr. Manghi was an inspirational and visionary leader who has left a strong legacy of her work in the community. With her strong commitment to serving the underserved she fostered the development of a vibrant Hispanic program serving individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. She was a key leader in founding Grupo SALTO, the support group of Latino families of children with autism that has grown to over 400 families. In addition she was co-director of our LEND program. Most of all Elina was an amazing human being with her warmth, passion and humanity.
