12:30 PM - 1:45 PM

Join us for the The 2018 Vivette R. Rifkin Seminar presented by Beth Finke.

In her talk titled, “Blind in the City: Not as Dark as it Sounds,” Finke outlines her decision to move from a small community to a large city after losing her sight at age 26. Through her talk, Finke examines cultural attitudes about disability, reasonable accommodation issues and the role disability arts and culture movements play in urban life.

Author, teacher and journalist Beth Finke is a recipient of a writers grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her third book, Writing Out Loud, was published last year and chronicles the challenges and rewards of Beth’s career leading Memoir-writing classes for older adults in Chicago.

Beth’s memoir Long Time, No See was published by University of Illinois Press in 2003, and her children’s book, Safe & Sound, won an award from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Beth is married to Mike Knezovich. They have one grown son, Gus, and live in the Printers Row neighborhood of Chicago with Beth’s Seeing Eye dog, Whitney.
