AHS IN THE NEWS

A study coauthored by BHIS assistant professor Andrew Boyd that found that an app improves medication adherence for heart stent patients is the subject of this UIC News release. The release was disseminated by Health Canal, Health Medicine Network and Science Daily

PUBLICATIONS AVAILABLE

A paper coauthored by BHIS assistant professor Andrew Boyd titled, “A Shovel-Ready Solution to Fill the Nursing Data Gap in the Interdisciplinary Clinical Picture” is available in the International Journal of Nursing Knowledge.

A paper coauthored DHD project coordinator and senior research specialist at the Center on Health Promotion Research on People with Disabilities Yochai Eisenberg titled, “Geographic access to dental care varies in Missouri and Wisconsin” is available in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry.

A paper coauthored by BHIS assistant professor Andrew Boyd titled, “A formal approach to discovering simultaneous additive masking between auditory medical alarms” is available in print in Applied Ergonomics. 

LECTURES AND PRESENTATIONS

Two posters coauthored by BHIS assistant professor Andrew Boyd titled,Patient-centered design in developing mobile application to improve adherence to oral anticancer medications” and “Exploration of Factors Affecting Adherence After Use of a Mobile Application Focused on Cardiology Medication” are accepted for presentation in the America Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting and Exposition March 25 in San Francisco.

PT assistant professor Tanvi Bhatt ’06 PHD MS and OT assistant professor Susan Magasi ’02 MS OT, ’06 PHD DS are recipients of the 2016 UIC Researcher and Scholar of the Year Rising Star Award in the clinical sciences and social sciences categories respectively for their demonstrated outstanding promise to become future leaders in their area of expertise.

"EXTRACURRICULAR" ENGAGEMENT

KN clinical assistant professor John Coumbe-Lilley ’02 MS KINES has been appointed as the faculty athletic representative (FAR) effective Jan. 1 by Chancellor Amiridis. The FAR serves to promote academic integrity and institutional control of intercollegiate athletics, to facilitate the integration of academic and athletic components within the university community, and to enhance the student-athlete experience.

DS doctoral student Katherine Enriquez is one of two recipients of the 2017 American Association of People with Disabilities Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award which recognizes “outstanding emerging leaders with disabilities who exemplify leadership, advocacy, and dedication to the broader cross-disability community.”

A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine calls for revisions to the WIC Program and improved flexibility for cultural preferences and breast-feeding.KN associate professor Angela Odoms-Young is a member of the committee that carried out the study and wrote the congressionally mandated report.

A study coauthored by BHIS assistant professor Joanna Abraham, which shows that structured tools can help prevent communication errors during multidisciplinary morning rounds in the hospital, is the subject of this Pharmacy Choice news article and this thirdAge piece.

A chapter coauthored by OT professor and department head Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar titled, “Strategies and tools for assessing cultural competence” is available in “Culture and Occupation: Effectiveness for Occupational Therapy Practice, Education, and Research,” a book titled published by AOTA Press.

LECTURES AND PRESENTATIONS

A paper coauthored by BHIS assistant professor Spyros Kitsiou and PT professor and department head Ross Arena among others titled, “Development of an innovative mHealth platform for remote physical activity monitoring and health coaching of cardiac rehabilitation patients” has been accepted for publication in the proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics and will be presented at the conference in Orlando Feb. 16-19.

STUDENT AND ALUMNI NEWS

DS doctoral student Yue Xu is a recipient of a 2016 UIC Chancellor’s Graduate Research Award, which supports pilot studies for use in doctoral dissertations or terminal degree projects.  Xu will use her award to translate and adapt “Parents Taking Action” for the Chinese community in Chicago.

A post authored by Jennifer Dubowsky ’94 BS KINES titled, “3 Ways to a Lucky New Year” is featured in Epoch Times.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has sent out a RFI on NIH data management, sharing and citation. The University Library Committee is drafting a response and would like to gather input from students, faculty and staff. A paper coauthored by PT clinical associate professor Carol Courtney titled, “Joint Mobilization Enhances Mechanisms of Conditioned Pain Modulation in Individuals with Osteoarthritis of the Knee” is the winner of the 2016 Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy Excellence in Research Award. 

PUBLICATIONS ACCEPTED

A paper coauthored by BHIS assistant professor Joanna Abraham titled, “Learning from Errors: Analysis of Medication Order Voiding in CPOE Systems” was accepted for publication to the Journal of the America Medical Informatics Association.

BHIS assistant professor Joanna Abraham will present a peer-reviewed abstract she coauthoredtitled, “Achieving Consensus on Core Nursing Handoff Components: A National Delphi Study” at the Midwest Nursing Research Society 41st Annual Research Conference April 6 – 9 in Minneapolis.

DHD instructor Robert Gould ’11 MS DHD, ’16 PhD DS, DHD visiting professor Pia Justesen and DHD associate professor Sarah Parker Harris presented a panel titled "Global Aspects of Disability” at an event highlighting global achievements in the area of disability sponsored by Northern Trust’s Disability Business Resource Council in observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

BHIS clinical assistant professor Valerie Prater has been appointed for a three-year term to the Health Information Management Accreditation Council of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). CAHIIM is the accrediting organization for health information management and health informatics programs, including those at UIC.
