Title: Am I Ready for Kindergarten?: Occupational Therapist Role in the Transition to Kindergarten for African-American Families

Description: Low-income, African American children are at a higher risk for being unprepared for the transition to kindergarten, especially when they are identified as having a disability or developmental delay. This presentation seeks to explore the multi-layered barriers that African American families face while navigating the special education system and highlights families strengths and resiliency during the process. Culturally relevant strategies and recommendations will be highlighted to assist occupational therapist in better supporting African American families through the kindergarten transition.

 

SOP lectures are free and open to anyone. Unless otherwise indicated, RSVP is not required for a given event. Occupational therapy practitioners who are currently licensed in Illinois can earn CE credit for attending, as the UIC Department of Occupational Therapy is licensed as a CE provider by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation.
