Music Therapy and End of Life Care

by Anna Galloway, MS, OTR/L, MT-BC, NICU MT, Occupational Therapist/Music Therapist

Although music is used in a variety of therapeutic settings by various professionals, there are strategies and education that direct how best to implement music interventions appropriately in therapy practice. Music Therapy is an evidence-based profession centered around using music modalities as a tool to achieve non-therapeutic goals. This presentation describes the profession of music therapy, illustrates the use of music therapy interventions, and briefly demonstrates ways non-music therapy professionals can utilize music therapy concepts in their professional practice. Additionally, this presentation will describe music therapy’s role in hospice and end of life care and will highlight the professions currently serving on the care team in this setting. Case examples and live demonstrations will highlight strategies for implementing music in therapeutic settings.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify three practice areas music therapists currently serve.
  • Identify three ways music affects the body.
  • Identify two unique components of hospice care.
  • Describe three disciplines who serve on a hospice care team.
  • Identify two strategies for implementing music effectively in a supportive and therapeutic environment.
