Why Should Occupational Therapists Care About Mothers of Children and Young People with a Disability? presented by Helen Bourke-Taylor Ph.D., Associate Professor, Occupational Therapist, Monash University, Australia

Abstract:

Mothers of children with disabilities have been identified as an at-risk group for mental and physical health differences. Research suggests that mothers experience higher stress, tend to prioritize others and have higher rates of anxiety and depression. Maternal health influences family participation and research evidence demonstrates that mothers support their child’s participation in play, recreation and community activities.  Hence the health and wellbeing of mothers is important and occupational therapists can implement strategies to support mothers within their practice. This lecture presents a ten year research project that: identified health and wellbeing differences among mothers; developed measurement instruments and outcome tools; and designed an evidence based program (Healthy Mothers Healthy Families) to improve the health and wellbeing of mothers. The lecture is based in international research evidence and features advances in this area from Australia.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the common time use and occupations of mothers of children with high care needs
  2. Describe research about the health and wellbeing of mothers of children with high care needs
  3. Explain the interconnection between mothers, children and participation at home and in the community
  4. Demonstrate one example of an occupational therapy program designed to empower and influence the healthy behaviors of mothers
