Medical Screening and Diagnostic Imaging for the Direct Access Physical Therapist

This course will highlight the various responsibilities physical therapists have when providing care as the patients’ first point of contact into the medical system. Emphasis will be placed on screening for conditions that may fall outside our scope of practice, determining when and if diagnostic imaging studies may be necessary, and how to appropriately categorize patients into relevant referral types (Emergent, Urgent and General). The course will include several case studies, interactive audience participation in the form of role playing, and culminate with a question and answer session.

7 Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) will be awarded.

Prerequisites:

  • Audience: Licensed PT Clinicians; 2nd and 3rd year DPT students
  • $249 (nonrefundable**) / Students $150 (must present student ID)

Objectives

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the true impact of commonly cited red flags in screening for medical conditions.
  • Implement medical screening procedures to appropriately identify conditions that may fall outside the physical therapists’ scope of practice.
  • Differentiate between conditions that require either an emergent, urgent or general referral.
  • Demonstrate familiarity and appropriate use of the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria in regards to recommendations for diagnostic imaging.
  • Understand when diagnostic imaging studies may be warranted and what tests specifically would be most helpful.

Instructor

Aaron Keil, DPT, OCS  currently serves as clinical associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a frequent speaker at national conferences on the topics of direct access and diagnostic imaging and has provided continuing education courses and guidance for several institutions across the country who are implementing these initiatives.

Dr. Keil has published on the topics of direct access and diagnostic imaging and served on the authorship committee for the APTA-sponsored white paper, Diagnostic and Procedural Imaging in Physical Therapist Practice.

He has functioned as a first-contact provider at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C., the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland and currently, at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
