Sedentary Behavior Among Older Adults: Movement Matters, and Timing May Too

Friday, May 3, 2019

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

We are proud to host an expert in the field who is recognized for his community-based healthy lifestyle research. Find out when moving matters for the older adult.

John Bellettiere has masters degrees in economics and health promotion and a PhD in epidemiology. His research focuses on three related topics: sedentary behavior measurement; identifying behavioral risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease; and developing ways to improve sitting habits to improve health. In collaboration with Dr. Andrea LaCroix and the broader OPACH team, Dr. Bellettiere has been using intensive longitudinal data from accelerometers to investigate the interrelationship among sitting time, patterns of sitting time, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and the association of these factors with incident cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Dr. Bellettiere is also working on an NIDDK-funded project to improve the measurement of sitting and sitting patterns by training machine learning algorithms to accurately predict posture using data from hip-worn accelerometers. Presently, Dr. Bellettiere is a postdoctoral research fellow in cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention at UC San Diego and is an adjunct assistant professor of public health at San Diego State University. He is a recent recipient of the National Science Foundation Smart and Connected Health Mentoring and Travel Grant, the Susan and Stephen Weber Endowed Scholarship, the John and Mary Anderson Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Public Health, and the Transdisciplinary Research in Energetics and Cancer (TREC) Scholarship.
