SUMMARY:Scholarship of Practice (SOP) Lecture Series – Things I wish I knew before I got into the field: Reflective insights into OT practice
DESCRIPTION:Please join the UIC Department of Occupational Therapy for the following Scholarship of Practice Lecture: Title: Things I wish I knew before I got into the field: Reflective insights into OT practice Presented by: Cecilia Vaughn-Guy, Ph.D. Date: Monday, February 2, 2026 Time: 1:00-2:00 pm Location: This presentation will be delivered in person in AHSB Rm 713, 1919 West Taylor St. Presentation Abstract & Objectives This presentation offers insights into the career trajectory of one of UIC?s OT alumna to help students imagine career pathways outside traditional OT practice. The presentation explores how a practitioner?s socio-historical context may influence their choice of employment settings, their development of advocacy for themselves and their clients, and their decision to advance knowledge within and outside the field. As critical reflection helped the presenter process her experiences, time will be offered for attendees to begin processing theirs and consider how their identities will influence their OT practice. At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to: Identify personal socio-historical contexts that influence their perspectives of occupational practice. Describe 2 non-traditional pathways for OT practice. Identify at least two ways that theoretical preparation can diverge from practice experience. The Scholarship of Practice (SOP) lecture series features presentations designed to share evidence-based knowledge relevant to occupational therapy practice. Department of Occupational Therapy is a licensed CE provider by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Occupational therapy practitioners currently licensed in Illinois can earn CE credit for attending.
