Research on family caregiving support in the United States: a strategic plan

About the Speakers:
Brian R. Grossman, ScM, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Co-investigator on a project to develop a national strategic plan for family support research at the Family Support Research and Training Center (FS-RTC). His research explores how state and federal policies affect the lives of people with disabilities and their families across the life course, with a particular interest in how families experience aging.Dr. Grossman is also interested in how disability service systems engage in outreach toward linguistic and cultural minorities, including Spanish speakers and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender older adults and people with disabilities.

Dr. Sandy Magaña, PhD, MSW, holds the Professorship in Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Magaña’s research focus is on the cultural context of families who care for persons with disabilities across the life course. Dr. Magaña’s current focus is on identifying racial and ethnic disparities, and pathways from identification and diagnosis to evidence-based treatment for underserved children with autism spectrum disorder and their families.

Randa Abdelrahim, MSc, is a research assistant at the Family Support research and Training Centre (FSRTC) and a Ph.D. candidate in disability studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. As an Arab American immigrant, Randa is interested in examining the social determinants of family support across immigrants and minority groups. Her research focuses on how multiple social structures such as culture, religion, race/ethnicity, and economic status impact the experiences of family caregivers across the life course. Randa also works as a teaching assistant at the department of disability and human development and the department of rehabilitation sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
