Presentation Abstract & Objectives

The transition to school is a critical milestone for a child, as it sets the foundation for their later academic and life trajectories. Yet, much research documents that African American children are largely at risk for being unprepared for school. Likewise, this risk is further exacerbated for children identified with a disability or developmental delay. There is limited research that documents the experiences of families navigating this transition at the nexus of race and disability. This presentation will summarize preliminary findings of a research study focused on the experiences of African American families of a child with a disability navigating the school transition during COVID-19. It will highlight the ways in which these families navigated this critical transition and provide recommendations on how to support these families as occupational therapist working in early intervention and school-based settings.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

1. Identify disparities at the intersection of race and disability in education
2. Identify the school readiness skills and abilities important to African American families of children with disabilities transitioning into school
3. Describe two ways that occupational therapist can support African American families of children with disabilities during the school readiness process

The Scholarship of Practice (SOP) lecture series features presentations designed to share evidence-based knowledge relevant to occupational therapy practice. Occupational therapy practitioners who are currently licensed in Illinois can earn CE credit for attending, as the UIC Department of Occupational Therapy is a licensed CE provider by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
