SUMMARY:Research Week Chair Chats featuring Holden Thorp
DESCRIPTION:Holden Thorp has held a variety of roles in science: as a chemistry professor, author, entrepreneur and editor, giving him a multifaceted view of our current research and scientific climate. His decades as a professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Washington University in St. Louis and George Washington University laid the groundwork for two books he co-authored, on higher education and entrepreneurship and on the challenges currently facing higher-education institutions. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Inventors, Thorp cofounded Viamet Pharmaceuticals, which developed VIVJOA, now approved by the FDA. Now, as the editor-in-chief of Science magazine, he oversees the publication of cutting-edge research and science news with a broad national and international reach. For a special Research Week Chair Chat, Thorp will engage in conversation with UIC Vice Chancellor for Research Joanna Groden about the crucial importance of science communication and publishing in an uncertain time for research nationally and globally. When: Wednesday, April 23 3-4:30 p.m. Where: Moss Auditorium 909 S. Wolcott Ave. Chicago, IL 60612 Registration: Registration is required.
