This study investigates whether adjusting the genre styles of Scientific Editorial Cover Designs influences audience engagement with journal publications and articles.

To understand what scientific readers find engaging, I would like to invite you to be in a research study titled “Optimizing the Creation of Cover Art for High Impact on Scientific Audiences”.

The study will aim to answer the question:

How can the genres of fantasy, metaphor, and realism be used to increase engagement when creating editorial artwork to disseminate a graduate student’s dissertation to a scientific audience?

Participation in this research is voluntary; you don’t have to take part if you don’t want to and may opt out at any time!

Subjects eligible to participate in the survey must be 18 years or older and a current full-time UIC student and/or faculty member.

If you decide to take part, you will complete a short survey answering various multiple-choice questions about your familiarity with Bat Biology, interaction with scientific journals, and choosing between three editorial illustrations of the same subject matter in three genres to identify which would elicit you to continue reading the article.

Participation in the study will take approximately 20 minutes, and a link to the Qualtrics survey is provided below.

Survey Link

Raffle Opportunity: At the end of the survey, participants will have the opportunity to voluntarily enter a raffle to win a $25 Visa gift card.
