Rich Severin elected to serve on the Cardiopulmonary Section of APTA Board of Directors

Rich is involved in and enthusiastic about many aspects of Physical Therapy. He is certain to make significant contributions that go beyond UIC in his broader role with the Cardiopulmonary Section of APTA.
Rich Severin PT, DPT, CCS, Adjunct Clinical Instructor and Ph.D. Student in Rehabilitation Science has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Cardiopulmonary Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as a nominating committee member. He will officially start this position at the APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting Conference in February 2018 in New Orleans, LA.
Since his time as a physical therapy student, Rich Severin has been actively involved in multiple efforts to the advance field of cardiopulmonary physical therapy practice and the physical therapy profession as a whole. In the first 5 years of his career, he has already accumulated an extensive track record of professional service to the cardiopulmonary section of the APTA, including serving on:
  • the heart failure clinical practice guideline team,
  • the examination committee for the cardiopulmonary specialist board certification and,
  • the section’s communications committee, which he will chair starting February 2018.

Severin also holds a position on the editorial board for the cardiopulmonary section’s official scholarly publication, Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal. Additionally, he spearheaded recent efforts to further integrate cardiopulmonary physical therapy practice into other domains within the physical therapy profession and in collaboration with other health professions; most notably the #VitalsAreVITAL campaign which raises awareness for hypertension and the importance of screening.

His knowledge, service and, expertise affords him a unique and valuable perspective and pulse on the physical therapy profession. With his election to this position, Severin will continue to advance of the cardiopulmonary section and physical therapy profession.

Those attending CSM will have two opportunities to see Rich in action. He will be presenting a poster Cardiovascular Disease Screening in Physical Therapy Practice Across Different Settings: A Survey Study, co-authored with UIC’s Shane Philips and Adam Wielechowski.
Severin will also be giving a talk, Respiratory Muscle Training Prescription: Endurance or Strength, along with Barbara Smith, Larry Cahalin, Danny Martin and Nathan Hellyer.
