PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences

Rehabilitation Sciences at UIC comprises bodies of knowledge from Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and other rehabilitation-related disciplines that seek to enhance functioning and empower individuals with disabilities. Because this is a mentor-driven program, students immerse themselves in studying a topical area that is of shared interest with the student's primary mentor.

This new degree was approved by the Illinois Board of Higher education on October 7, 2014. Doctoral students may earn a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences. The PhD Program in Rehabilitation Sciences provides a unique, intensive and interdisciplinary doctoral-level educational experience in the theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical aspects of rehabilitation sciences.

Graduates are prepared to fulfill traditional faculty roles in PT, OT, and Kinesiology and transform our current approaches to rehabilitation theory and practice. Rehabilitation Sciences encompasses the scientific study of the rehabilitation, assessment, reduction, and adaptation to physical, cognitive, and psychosocial aspects of disability, chronic health conditions, and functioning. The overarching purpose of this program is to address significant faculty shortages in the rehabilitation disciplines, with a specific focus on shortages within Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy (not to the exclusion of other rehabilitation professionals, such as speech and language pathologists, rehabilitation nurses, or rehabilitation physicians).

PhD Program financial aid opportunities

The Rehabilitation Sciences PhD degree program at UIC strives on its students being well rounded; in addition to their research and course work students are encouraged to also publish the results of their studies. In an attempt to foster publications of our students, the program is offering dollars to assist in offsetting the cost of required by some journals publication fees.
