Madhavan Receives NIH R01 Grant to Advance Teleassessment in Stroke Rehabilitation
Introduction
Dr. Sangeetha Madhavan has received a new NIH R01 grant for the project, “Teleassessment of Gait and Balance After Stroke: Bridging Gaps in Rehabilitation Access.”
The multi-center study will address a critical challenge in stroke rehabilitation: the lack of validated methods to remotely assess gait and balance. For many stroke survivors, particularly those living in rural or underserved communities, traveling to a clinic for regular assessments can be difficult. This study will examine whether commonly used gait and balance assessments can be conducted safely and reliably in a person’s home using telehealth. The goal is to give clinicians practical tools to evaluate patients remotely and make rehabilitation services more accessible to people who may otherwise have difficulty receiving care.
The interdisciplinary research team includes Dr. Kesar of Emory University, Dr. Jayaraman of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and Drs. Fischer, Bhaumik, and Testai, from the University of Illinois Chicago. Together, the team brings expertise in stroke rehabilitation, gait biomechanics, telehealth, outcome measurement, biostatistics, and neurology.
