Download iCal FileChef Renea and the UIC Nutrition Teaching Garden are hosting a honey harvest class led by expert beekeeper Caroline Corboy of the Chicago Honey Co-Op. At this event, we will be collecting 50% of the honey produced in two hives from the UIC Nutrition Teaching Garden during the 2026 grow year. Join us to learn more about pollinators, how the bees store pollen resources to make honey, and how humans can responsibly harvest some of the honey for cooking purposes. The honey will be used primarily by students enrolled in courses taught in the HN foods lab. Each participant will be able to take home a small jar of honey for themselves.
The garden’s honeybee program was established in 2023 with support from a UIC Sustainability Grant and the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition. Through our partnership with the Chicago Honey Co-Op, students and participants learn about honeybees, pollination, hive health and maintenance, and the honey-harvesting process.
What to Wear
Please wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Long hair should be tied back. Bee veils and gloves will be provided as needed.
Who Can Attend?
These sessions are open to all interested UIC students and staff. Beginners and experienced participants are welcome.
