This talk presents a project that explores the experiences of people with disabilities on advisory committees to improve accessibility of their communities. The purpose of the study was to better understand how they perceive their engagement in this civic role and its impact both for themselves and their community. Dr. Labbé and team conducted four focus groups with 26 participants with disabilities who served on local government advisory committees in the Midwest region. The presentation will highlight the main findings from these discussions and recommendations for supporting civic engagement of people with disabilities.
Speakers:
Delphine Labbé, Ph.D. Assistant Professor-UIC Department of Disability & Human Development
Delphine Labbé's research focuses on promoting full participation and health of people living with disabilities by optimizing their interaction with the social and physical environment. Her community-based research focuses on 3 main areas: 1) The lived experience of people with disabilities within their built and social urban environment, with a focus on pedestrian and active transportation; 2) Health promotion through recreational and physical activities for people with disabilities of all ages; and 3) the experience with assistive technologies of users and caregivers as a health determinant. Grounded in the social model of disability and the ecosystemic approach, she is using various qualitative and mixed methods approaches such as interviews, focus groups, photovoice, Q-methodology, world Cafés, and surveys. She has also expertise in Knowledge Translation and is deeply committed to co-construct knowledge with people with disabilities and with relevant stakeholders (e.g. urban planners, health care professionals) to produce policy and social changes.
Yochai Eisenberg currently serves on the USDOT's Advisory Committee on Transportation Equity, the Illinois DOTs Active Transportation Advisory Board, and an international advisory board for The Case for Planning for and with People with Disabilities hosted by Institute for Transportation & Development Policy and the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative.
