Overview:
As autistic adults age, some number will experience cognitive decline and dementia. Yet clinicians, caregivers, and community providers often lack guidance on how dementia presents in autistic adults and how care approaches may need to be adapted. This webinar will provide a brief overview of foundational knowledge and practical clinical guidance to support aging autistic adults with dementia in family homes, group homes, and other community-based settings.

Audience:
Primary care providers, behavioral health clinicians, direct support professionals, family caregivers, case managers, residential providers, and aging/disability service coordinators.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to:
  • Describe how dementia may present differently in autistic adults.
  • Distinguish lifelong autistic traits from new cognitive decline.
  • Identify practical caregiving and clinical strategies to support autistic adults with dementia in community settings.
  • Recognize when referral for further evaluation or specialty care is indicated.
