Emergency Department–Based Education and mHealth Empowerment Intervention for Hypertension (TOUCHED trial)

Drs. Heather Prendergast (Emergency Medicine) and Spyros Kitsiou (BHIS) publish results of their NIH-funded research study in JAMA Cardiology

In a newly published study in JAMA Cardiology, UIC Emergency Faculty member Dr. Prendergast and Biomedical Informatics faculty Dr. Kitsiou, led a first-of-its kind NIH-funded clinical trial showing that a behavioral health intervention during an emergency department visit — brief pharmacist consultation coupled with  patient-centered mobile health technology — significantly improved blood pressure control six months later. Results suggest that an ED-based multidisciplinary intervention may be effective in improving hypertension management compared with standard discharge instructions with outpatient referral.
