Peer Mentor Role
The EXITO Peer Mentor is instrumental in providing a supportive figure role to EXITO fellows. EXITO Peer Mentors actively participate in program activities (ie weekly enrichment workshops), foster community building among the cohort, and provided personalized support to assigned mentees. Leveraging their experience, EXITO Peer Mentors play a crucial part in role modeling desired character traits for growth and learning and motivating, encouraging and supporting students to absorb the EXITO’s programs full potential.
Qualities of an EXITO Peer Mentor
- Passionate about UIC and AHS
- Strong public speaking skills
- Familiarity with UIC campus and resources
- Ability to work independently and follow through on projects
- Respect for a diversity of individuals and experiences
- A warm and friendly presence
- Interested in investing in people
- Good time management skills
- Willingness to provide and accept constructive feedback
Peer Mentor Responsibilities
- Establish a supportive connection with your assigned mentee(s), offering guidance and assistance on an ad hoc basis.
- Actively participate in weekly enrichment meetings, engaging (but not monopolizing) discussions and encourage fellows to engage in the work.
- Note: Enrichment sessions vary by cohort but we are seeking an EXITO Peer Mentor for cohort 1 which meets biweekly on Wednesdays, 4pm- 5pm
- Note: This not only enhances your understanding of the content but also enables you to effectively support mentees in their professional development journey.
- Assist with food orders, set up and breakdown of Enrichment and other EXITO events.
- Serve as a reliable resource for addressing questions, concerns, and providing encouragement throughout the program.
- Foster a sense of community among scholars by actively contributing to the establishment of a peer support system within the cohort.
- Develop and implement 2 community building activities for fellows yearly
- Encourage EXITO Fellows to connect, collaborate, and share insights, creating a collaborative learning environment.
- Assist in recruitment for new EXITO cohorts and be able to speak about the program to large audiences.
- Participate in social media platforms created by group (ie. GroupMe, WhatApp or other designated platform)
- Provide feedback to program leads regarding observations and areas for support.
- Complete any evaluations and assessments
- Attend peer mentor meetings, share and create ideas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Eligibility
- Must have background in research, either independent or part of a lab.
- Must be available during the times of the EXITO enrichment workshop series to lead and guide other students.

- Note: Students can be undergraduates or at the graduate level but this position has been approved only for undergraduate hourly wage.
