Font Size and Style for Document Accessibility

Weekly Accessibility Tips

Dear Colleagues,

Use the Font Tip Sheet to learn how to make your text easier to read with font size and style choices.

Minimum Size

  • Word/Docs – 12 point
  • PowerPoint/Slides
    • Titles/Headings – 32 point
    • Body text – 24 point
  • Excel/Sheets – 12 point

Style

Sans-serif fonts are preferred because they do not have “Serifs.” Serifs are small strokes or flourishes at the ends of letters. Serif fonts can be visually distracting, making it harder to read, especially for people with dyslexia or other print disabilities.

  • Sans-Serif fonts
    • Arial
    • Helvetica
    • Verdana
    • Calibri
    • Aptos
    • Theinhardt (UIC signature font)
  • Fonts approved for branding
  • If you must use a serif font, the most readable option is Times New Roman
