Graduate Assistant Opportunity With UIC’s Pre-Med GPPA Program

GPPA Medical Scholars Program seeks graduate assistant for 15-20 hours weekly (no tuition waiver) beginning fall 2024.

The Medical Scholars Program in the College of Medicine is seeking a Graduate Hourly Assistant to support the ongoing developmental needs and growing interest of the Medical Scholars Program.

The GPPA Medical Scholars Program in the College of Medicine aims to instill the values and principles of a liberal education as the foundation for medical knowledge. The program promotes excellent undergraduate scholarship through the exploration of both the humanities and sciences. The program, which grants acceptance into the University of Illinois College of Medicine, is the largest GPPA (Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions) program offered, attracting close to 500 applicants a year from across the state of Illinois. We have about 120 students enrolled in the program annually.

This position will be up to 15-20 hours per week reporting directly to the associate director and responsible to the director beginning at the start of the fall 2024 semester. The person selected will be joining a team and working with an extraordinarily dedicated and talented group of faculty, students, and staff. The experience will, as it has over the past fifteen years, provide interesting learning and unparalleled opportunities for graduate students committed to learning about medicine, health, and society in the context of social justice. Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Implement special events:
    • New Student Parent Welcome – End of August/early September
    • Student Town Halls
    • Special Seminars – Fall and Spring
    • Senior Thesis Forum – April 2024
  • Assist with all aspects of the admissions process including data entry of applications and scheduling interviews:
    • The Admissions “season” begins in December and goes through March. We receive about 500 applications and interview anywhere from 90-120 students. This is a very fast paced and busy time of year.
  • Maintain Blackboard site:
    • Medical Scholars students take five discussion courses with us in the College of Medicine. Each course has its own blackboard site. We will have two to three courses/sites a semester.
  • Student Scheduling and Communications
    • Send student announcements via email
    • Answer student inquiries, liaise between students and directors or course instructors, etc.
  • Program Communications
    • Assist with program publications (newsletter, new student program, etc.)
    • Send program communications and announcements to the community
  • Other duties as needed
