Study abroad in Italy

This summer, KN faculty Michelle Adams, led 15 students on a transformative 15-day study abroad experience in Italy, exploring the science and culture of healthy aging and longevity. The program took students to the renowned Blue Zone on the island of Sardinia, where they examined the lifestyle, environmental, and social factors that contribute to one of the world's longest-living populations. The experience continued in Siena, Tuscany, where students immersed themselves in Italian culture through visits to senior living centers, hands-on cooking classes, wellness activities, and community events, engaging with local residents to better understand how daily habits, strong social connections, and community support influence lifelong health. Building on the success of Adams’ previous study abroad experiences in the Blue Zone of Costa Rica, this year's expansion to Italy offered students a unique opportunity to compare two of the world's healthiest populations while gaining valuable global perspectives on public health, healthy aging, and the role of culture in promoting longevity. The program reflects the Department of Kinesiology's commitment to providing immersive, high-impact learning experiences that prepare students to become future leaders in health, wellness, and public health.
