UIC Researcher Interviewed, Research Cited in Chicago Tribune Article
A March 3, 2025 Chicago Tribune article, Battling state's 'barriers' to community placement: In Chicago and beyond, people with developmental disabilities can wait years, cites research from the Institute on Disability and Human Development (IDHD) at UIC. The article is about state-operated developmental centers (SODCs), or institutions, for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and the barriers to leaving SODCs in search of community living. Illinois continues to maintain seven public institutions and nearly 200 privately-operated institutions. Dr. Caitlin Crabb was interviewed for the article in relation to the research that she heads up, along with Drs. Kelly Hsieh and Tamar Heller. The research cited is an analysis of transitions of people with IDD out of SODCs in Illinois. IDHD has evaluated these transitions of people out of SODCs since 2011 (representing transitions beginning in 2001) up through 2023, and this year the analyses will be updated through June 30, 2024.
