Gina Mulanthara publishes op-ed in Crain’s Chicago Business

Diabetes disproportionately impacts minorities, especially African-Americans and people of Hispanic origin.

OTD student Gina  Mulanthara wrote an op-ed for Chicago Crains Business titled, “We’ve been failing the black community long before COVID-19.” Mulanthara works with Heidi Fischer to provide self-management services to people experiencing diabetes at UI Health as part of the UIC OT Faculty Practice .

“Social determinants of health impact glycemic control, cholesterol and blood pressure. Stress and depression play a major role in medical non-adherence. Perceived discrimination and chronic stress compromise the body’s ability to fight off disease and diminish engagement with healthcare. The American Diabetes Association has outlined state and federal legislative and regulatory priorities for 2020, now more important than ever for achieving health equity in Chicago.”
