About
Karen Patena is Clinical Associate Professor Emerita. Most recently, she served as clinical associate professor, director of UIC’s Health Information Management programs, and interim associate head of the Department of BHIS. Prior to academia, Karen worked in hospital medical record management as well as systems planning and implementation, and served as a member of the Cerner implementation team at UIC.
Karen has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, including the AHIMA Triumph Educator Award; the UIC Silver Circle Award; the Teaching Recognition Award from the UIC Council for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; and multiple UIC College of Applied Health Sciences Excalibur Awards. She is active in HIM professional associations at the national, state and local levels, and has received the Illinois HIM Association’s Distinguished Member and Professional Achievement awards.
