Lieke van Heumen named 2023 fellow of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Lieke van Heumen

DHD clinical assistant professor Lieke van Heumen ‘15 PhD DHD, whose work focuses on aging with disability, is among five researchers named 2023 fellows of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Fellows are selected for their contributions to the field of intellectual disability and their participation in the association. She will be honored at the group’s annual meeting this June in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Van Heumen is co-investigator with Kelly Hsieh, DHD research associate professor, for a study on the use of mHealth in promoting physical activity for adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. The study is funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research.

She was principal investigator on a three-year Special Olympics International project related to research and evaluation translation and dissemination.

She has been honored for teaching at UIC, including the Teaching Recognition award and the AHS Excalibur Award for Teaching Excellence.
