Presentation Abstract & Objectives
Healthy Mothers Healthy Families (HMHF) is an evidence-based health and empowerment program for mothers of children with disability. HMHF is an occupational therapy program that was developed and evaluated over 18 years with mothers. HMHF is now available in 4 researched formats: online self-paced; single day f2f workshop delivered by an OT/health professional; online delivered in 3 parts by HMHF-credentialled mother-facilitators; or via occupational therapy led Health Promoting Activity Coaching. Guided by knowledge translation and implementation principles, HMHF is now delivering and evaluating whole of pediatric practice culture changes to improve supports for mothers, and ultimately support their health and wellbeing, alongside their child’s services. This presentation provides an overview of the HMHF programs and the knowledge translation and implementation approach currently underway at pediatric practices in Melbourne, Australia and Chicago.
At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Explain the key components, effective elements and research evaluating the Healthy Mothers Healthy Families program.
- Critique the barriers and enablers to better supporting mothers in pediatric occupational therapy practice.
- Discuss the impact of knowledge translation HMHF strategies and the implementation of HMHF tools in pediatric practice.
The Scholarship of Practice (SOP) lecture series features presentations designed to share evidence-based knowledge relevant to occupational therapy practice. Department of Occupational Therapy is a licensed CE provider by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
