Webinar: Family Quality of Life- Theory, Measurement, and Applications Across the Lifespan

TAP / IDHD / LEND Webinar Series

February 26, 2026

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

This webinar will explore the construct of Family Quality of Life (FQOL) as it relates to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families across the lifespan. Family quality of life is increasingly recognized as a critical outcome in disability services, yet it is often underutilized in practice, research, and policy decision-making. This presentation will provide an overview of the theoretical foundations of FQOL and highlight its relevance for understanding family well-being within diverse caregiving contexts. The webinar will examine why systematic measurement of FQOL is essential for practitioners, researchers, and policymakers. Participants will gain insight into how FQOL measurement can guide intervention planning, inform service delivery, and support data-driven decision-making at both the family and systems levels. Emphasis will be placed on the role of FQOL as a strengths-based framework that captures family priorities, resources, and outcomes beyond individual-level functioning. Empirical data from recent family support projects in Michigan will be presented to demonstrate the practical application of the FQOL framework. These examples will illustrate how FQOL measures have been used to identify key predictors of family well-being and to evaluate the impact of targeted supports and services. Findings will highlight factors that contribute to positive outcomes, including access to resources, future planning, and caregiver support. The webinar will also discuss implications for service providers and program developers seeking to incorporate FQOL measurement into routine practice. By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer understanding of how FQOL can be used as a meaningful outcome measure to enhance family-centered care, support aging caregivers, and inform policy initiatives aimed at improving the lives of individuals with IDD and their families.
