On Monday, October 6, AHS dean Carlos Crespo met with leadership of Pompeu Fabra University’s TecnoCampus School of Health Sciences in Barcelona to formally begin an agreement between the two institutions. Crespo and TecnoCampus’ general director Josep Lluís Checa jointly signed a letter of intent to establish an educational collaboration between UIC and the Spanish university.

"This type of collaboration will increase the quality of opportunities for AHS students to engage in curricular training in a variety of areas, including kinesiology, nutrition and rehabilitation sciences,” Crespo said. “AHS will also learn more about how universities can engage with private industry in developing technologies to prevent injuries in sports performance and in the workplace.”

The connection between the two institutions developed through TecnoCampus professor Carla Pérez-Chirinos’ research stay at UIC.

“Dr. Perez-Chirino has been the guiding force behind all of these efforts,” Crespo said. “Her engagement in research with faculty from AHS has already generated great recognition by the federal government. More recently, the Fulbright Program, a flagship U.S. government-sponsored international educational and cultural exchange program, recommended Dr. Perez-Chirino to be the recipient of a grant to continue leading these projects.”

The collaboration between AHS and TecnoCampus strengthens international ties in the fields of health innovation and applied research, offering new opportunities for joint projects. The primary initiatives are to conduct faculty and student exchanges, coordinate visiting professor appointments and develop new and innovative research across international lines.
