On April 13, AHS partnered with City Colleges of Chicago at a health science event for high school students through Chicago Public Schools’ Department of Early College and Career Education. The event offered 35 students from Little Village Lawndale High School and D.H. Williams Medical Prep High School roadmaps to college and career planning in the health care sector and included a hands-on team challenge to put their new knowledge into practice.

The event was hosted under Chicago Roadmap 2.0, a partnership that helps students transfer seamlessly from CPS to CCC to UIC without losing course credits and earn their bachelor's degrees in a timely, affordable fashion. Representatives from AHS outlined post-secondary opportunities, particularly in rehabilitation sciences, and showcased zero–credit loss transfer plans that integrate early college coursework during high school.

Clinical associate professor in RS Jennifer Wescott '17 MS OT, '18 P-OTD led an interdisciplinary team of AHS faculty and students who facilitated a hands-on team challenge for the students, who learned about supporting clients with disabilities and person-centered rehabilitation. The goal was to develop a strategy for a client with disabilities to make a safe and meaningful return to cooking following an injury or illness.

By participating in events like this one and in the overall Chicago Roadmap 2.0 project, AHS and its partners support student success from the ground up, inspiring the next generation of health science scholars and professionals.
