Andrew Boyd — professor in BHIS and PT and associate vice chancellor for research — has been elected as a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. He is among 24 new fellows who will be inducted into the ACMI on November 16 at a ceremonial dinner during the American Medical Informatics Association’s Annual Symposium.

“ACMI recognizes major research contributions in the field of biomedical and health informatics,” said Boyd.

His fellowship with the organization illustrates the continued presence of AHS at the cutting edge of the field. Boyd is the fourth UIC-affiliated fellow elected to the ACMI — preceded by Walter Panko, former BHIS director and assistant vice chancellor for health informatics, in 1998; Annette Valenta, BHIS professor emerita, in 2019 and Neil Smalheiser, professor of psychiatry, in 2021.

“UIC health informatics continues to grow and increase its impact in the country and the world.”

Boyd is also the associate chief health information officer for innovation and research at UI Health. His laboratory researches data simplification to improve clinical outcomes, engaging patients, administrators and clinicians. He has designed apps for cardiology and oncology patients, for example, to improve medication adherence and empower patients. His work transforms data from electronic health records to help patients participate in their own care.  He is also leveraging AI across the entire healthcare team — including nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists — to improve health.
