Dr. Valenta received her BS, MPH and DrPH from University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and holds a Certificate in On-Line Teaching and Learning from California State University, Hayward. After a decade of corporate consulting and professional association program administration, she returned in 1991 to develop UIC’s model curriculum in informatics, the first national federally funded graduate-level specialization in health informatics and information management. In 1997, with funding from the Sloan Foundation and UI-OnLine, she moved the face-to-face Certificate in Health Informatics to an online format. By 2000, she had established the online MS in Health Informatics.
Funded through AHRQ, HHS, and DOD, her research focuses on organizational issues surrounding health technology, including the role of information technology in patient safety. She has published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Academic Medicine, JALN: Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks, Studies in Health Technology and Informatics, Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine, and International Journal of Computational Models and Algorithms in Medicine.
