Abstract

This project explores strategies and supports that enable families of individuals with disabilities to thrive. Building on prior research, it emphasizes resilience and well-being rather than solely focusing on caregiving challenges. Using a sequential mixed-methods design, the study begins with a national survey to assess factors contributing to family well-being. This is followed by qualitative focus groups involving both caregivers and individuals with disabilities to delve deeper into their lived experiences. The final phase uses photovoice and diary studies to capture day-to-day instances of caregiving and support dynamics within family dyads. The findings aim to inform policies and practices that promote equity, community inclusion, and holistic family support. This five-year, nationwide initiative represents a shift in caregiving research, focusing on thriving as a multidimensional construct encompassing mental, physical, and social well-being.
