Abstract
The WAVE Program addresses the pressing need for targeted health promotion among older family caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Caregivers often face chronic health challenges, compounded by the physical and emotional demands of caregiving. This study leverages wearable technology and social networking to foster physical activity (PA) and improve caregivers’ well-being. Participants engage in a 12-week intervention that includes virtual training on stress management, chronic health conditions, and advocacy, followed by an 8-week PA regimen utilizing Fitbit devices. Social networking features, including team-based step goals and peer support, encourage sustained engagement. The study incorporates a randomized controlled design, comparing intervention participants to a control group receiving only the virtual training. Primary outcomes include changes in PA levels, physical fitness, and psychosocial well-being, while secondary outcomes focus on self-efficacy and caregiving-related stress. This innovative approach not only enhances caregivers’ health but also improves their capacity to support individuals with IDD. Findings will guide future health interventions, ensuring scalable, culturally competent solutions that promote resilience and sustainability among caregiving families.
