During his tenure at UIC/DHD, Dr. Yamaki has focused his work on two areas: the health of people with disabilities and international collaboration with disability advocates.
Health of People with Disabilities: With his academic training from UIC/SPH, Dr. Yamaki has explored the intersection of health and disability throughout his career at DHD. His primary interest has expanded from a) uncovering the health status of people with disabilities, b) facilitating the inclusion of people with disabilities in public health programs, c) understanding the health service utilization of persons with disabilities, and finally to d) increasing the number of healthcare providers who are knowledgeable about people with disabilities.
International collaboration: Since the 1990s, Dr. Yamaki has hosted disability advocates from Japan by organizing workshops for individuals with IDD, their family/professional caregivers, and faculty members from Japan. He also served as an interpreter for the U.S. and Japanese researchers. He authored and co-authored a series of invited articles on U.S. IDD services in Japanese and translated monographs by U.S. researchers into Japanese. Since 2010, Dr. Yamak has continued to offer a two-week workshop annually for Japanese practitioners, showcasing best practices in the field.
