Dr. Sangeetha Madhavan is a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois Chicago and serves as Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives in the College of Applied Health Sciences. She is also the Associate Head for Student and Faculty Development and Community Engagement within her department.
Her research focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying motor recovery after stroke, with an emphasis on how targeted interventions can enhance neuroplasticity and improve functional outcomes. She is particularly known for her work in neuromodulation, including the use of non-invasive brain stimulation, exercise, and task-specific training to optimize rehabilitation. Her work has contributed to shaping current approaches to post stroke gait recovery and lower limb rehabilitation.
Dr. Madhavan has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health and has published over 86 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals, with her work widely cited in neurorehabilitation . Her research spans both fundamental mechanisms and translational applications, including the development of accessible, technology-enabled rehabilitation approaches.
In addition to her research, she is a dedicated educator and mentor, known for integrating neuroscience and clinical practice in her teaching. She has trained numerous students and early-career researchers who have gone on to successful academic and clinical careers.
