Statement on recent Supreme Court decision

Last week, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. (SFAI) v. President and Fellows of Harvard and SFAI v. University of North Carolina.

As a college we are committed to providing access and opportunity to individuals of diverse backgrounds who will become our future biomedical workforce. A diverse health care workforce is better prepared to address the needs of the diverse communities that they serve, many of which are already experiencing health disparities. Health disparities—defined as preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations—have been directly and causally linked to a lack of diversity in the health care workforce.

As a Minority-Serving Institution, the University of Illinois Chicago welcomes students from multiple backgrounds and will continue to promote access, diversity, equity and inclusion within the allowable parameters established by law. We will continue to be an access-oriented, research-intensive Urban Serving University.

Our goal in the College of Applied Health Sciences has not changed.

We will continue to welcome students from all backgrounds and our faculty and staff will continue to be committed to train the best and most diverse health science workforce.
