Kalyan (Kal) Pasupathy appointed professor and head of BHIS

Dear AHS students, faculty and staff,

I write to announce the appointment of Kalyan (Kal) Pasupathy as professor and head of the Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences in the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences.

Dr. Pasupathy brings over 20 years of experience in health informatics and data science research and scholarship across multiple disciplines including systems engineering, data science, mathematical modeling, health care management and translational practices for improving patient care. Most recently, he served as associate professor in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science Department of Health Science Research.

In addition, Dr. Pasupathy has published over 90 peer-reviewed scholarly manuscripts and two editions of “Health Informatics: A System Perspective.” He has obtained close to $8 million in research funding and is currently a PI of a $2.5 million award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Most impressively, and in addition to being a productive and impactful researcher, Dr. Pasupathy has held several administrative positions of high importance. He is the founding scientific director for the Information and Decision Engineering program at the Mayo Clinic Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery. He is also the founding scientific director of the Mayo Learning Laboratories. Dr. Pasupathy has been an active member of boards, task forces and committees for national organizations in his field, and currently serves as associate editor of “IISE Transactions in Healthcare Systems Engineering” and “INFORMS Journal on Data Science.”

Dr. Pasupathy holds an MS and Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a BS in Production Engineering from Bharathiar University in India. He succeeds Anthony Faiola and will begin his appointment Aug. 16, 2021, pending University of Illinois Board of Trustees approval.
