Abstract:

The “Families Achieving Competency Together” (F.A.C.T) program addresses challenges related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Botswana, Africa. A literature review on ASD prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa and exploring family education and interventions, with a focus on occupational therapy’s role, revealed a significant service need. A needs assessment highlighted families’ common struggles with confusion and inadequacy regarding their children with ASD. Recognizing the need for targeted family education in Sub-Saharan Africa, the F.A.C.T program aims to enhance collaboration and support. Through a six-module educational experience covering topics such as sensory, play, self-help skills, school systems, and advocacy, the initiative underscores the unique contribution of occupational therapy in raising awareness and knowledge of ASD in Sub-Saharan Africa.
