Meet Em

Why did you choose DHD at UIC?
In high school I was diagnosed with autism and anxiety. During my undergrad I completed a certificate in disability studies. Taking disability studies classes has helped me feel connected to disability history and culture. I now have a better understanding of concepts that make me a better advocate for myself and others with disabilities. My experience has developed my interest in disability research. I want to pursue a PhD in disability studies so that I can continue to focus on research that will help improve the inclusion and acceptance of disabled people. UIC seems to be the best choice for a disability studies program that primarily focuses on research.

What do you want to do with a DHD degree?
I hope to use my degree to work with fellow autistic self advocates. I am not sure what my exact career path will be, but I know that I want to do work that helps to create more inclusive environments and acceptance for disabled people.

Research Interests
I am currently interested in the overlap between disabled identity and LGBTQIA+ identities, particularly transgender/gender nonconforming autistic people.

Education
