Kinesiology students and faculty volunteer at the 2023 Chicago Marathon

Approximately 45 UIC kinesiology undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty volunteered as members of the Sweep Team and the PsychTeam (providing psychological first aid) at the 2023 Chicago Marathon under the supervision of John Coumbe-Lilley and Meredith Wekesser.

Second-year master’s in kinesiology (performance, sports and exercise psychology concentration) students led a hands-on workshop to help prepare the student volunteers who also completed 10 hours of online training to receive certificates in psychological first aid from the National Child Trauma Service Network.

The UIC team was part of a 1,700 volunteer effort providing support around the course to ensure safety and fun for everyone including Annemarie Chizewszki who finished the marathon.
