HIT-HIM Transfer Planning Guide: Monroe Community College

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), in collaboration with Monroe Community College (Monroe), has developed this Transfer Planning Guide for Monroe Health Information Technology (HIT) students interested in UIC’s HIM Online Degree Program. The coursework identified in this guide is specific only to the Monroe HIT program and the UIC HIM program and cannot be used for transfer into any other UIC program. Students are required to contact the UIC HIT_HIM Admission Advisor, and should do so as early as possible. The UIC advisors will work with you to develop a detailed plan that will allow you to enroll at UIC in the Online HIM Program for an upcoming term.

UIC offers provisional admission to Monroe HIT/RHIT students which guarantees them a spot in the Online HIM program once Steps 1 and 2 of the Transfer Planning Guide are satisfied. Admission is only guaranteed when contact with a UIC HIT-HIM Admission Advisor is made prior to application to the UIC HIT-HIM online program.

  • An Associate in Applied Science Health Information Technology Degree (HIT)
  • A current Registered Health Information Technology (RHIT) certification
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.50 (4.0 grading scale) and no less than a “C” in all required coursework
  • Completion of pre-requisite courses
  • Completion of all General Education requirements (These may be completed at UIC or Monroe)
  • Step 1: Complete the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Health Information Technology at Monroe (Monroe general education and HIT course requirements).
  • Step 2: Complete any outstanding HIM pre-requisite courses required to transfer to UIC’s HIT-HIM Online Degree Program.
  • Step 3: Complete general education courses and/or electives for 123 hours required for graduation. May be completed simultaneously with HIM courses at UIC or Monroe.
  • Step 4: Complete the HIT-HIM online degree program requirements.

Proficiency Credit for MCC HIT Courses. You will be awarded 21-28 semester hours of proficiency credit in recognition of having an RHIT certification and HIT degree from MCC. There is no additional tuition cost for the proficiency credits awarded at UIC.
