Minor in Health Information Management
Learn the fundamentals of acquiring, analyzing and protecting medical information vital to providing quality patient care
UIC’s undergraduate minor in health information management provides students majoring in any discipline with a fundamental proficiency of health care information technology, medical records, health care systems, health data analysis and quality.
The flexible curriculum allows you to select your electives in the areas of health care data analytics; information systems and technology; health care management; quality improvement, legal and compliance; and information governance, allowing you to tailor your minor based on your interests and your major.
Students with a computer science or business-based major can enhance their employment opportunities in the health care sector. Students with majors such as nursing, rehabilitation sciences, kinesiology, nutrition, public health and integrated health studies are better prepared to pursue careers as health care leaders.

All undergraduate UIC students at the sophomore level or higher are eligible to apply.
Admission criteria:
- Minimum GPA of 2.50/4.00
- Successful completion of HIM 410 with a grade of “C” or higher
- Consulted your home college about the acceptability and applicability of health information management course credit toward your degree

Complete our online form. Applications open during the first week of the fall and spring semesters and are accepted through the ninth week.
What’s next?
You’ll receive an admissions decision via email around week 12.
Registration for health information management courses is restricted to students with a declared health information management major. Non-HIM students pursuing the minor will need to register for courses through an HIM academic advisor.
