Minor in Nutrition

Build a foundation of knowledge in nutrition science

UIC’s undergraduate minor in nutrition is a great supplement if you’re interested in any aspect of healthcare. Through 12 required credit hours, you’ll cover topics that apply to disease prevention, food safety and public health.

Learn how to interpret and differentiate evidence-based nutrition science from the misinformation that frequently occurs with popular diets or supplements, as well as:

  • Principles of good nutrition and food preparation
  • Food to include in a normal daily diet
  • Actions, sources and recommended amounts of essential nutrients
  • Effects of nutritional deficiencies and excesses

Why minor in nutrition? Heading link

A minor in nutrition won’t just be beneficial for future academic and employment opportunities, it will also improve your personal nutrition, health and lifestyle. The skills you’ll learn with a minor in nutrition will allow you to differentiate fact from fiction when it comes to nutrition information and products. You’ll be able to apply those skills to your main area of study, and also become an informed consumer—something useful regardless of your field.

If you’re a current kinesiology major, this is the perfect fit. A minor in nutrition meets the growing need for health professionals that are well-versed in physical activity and nutrition—the two critical facets of health and wellness.

Our nutrition minor is designed for students who are interested in healthcare, but it’s open to students in any major. If you’re studying nursing, public health or biology, you’ll find the skills you learn particularly helpful in your future career.
