Understanding by doing: experiential learning
In kinesiology, learning goes beyond the classroom. There’s no better way to understand movement, health and performance than to experience it firsthand. As kinesiologists, we believe we must live what we learn and teach.
Experiential learning is a required part of our curriculum, giving students the chance to apply what they learn in real-world settings. Whether working with athletes, assisting in rehabilitation clinics, conducting research or teaching others, our hands-on opportunities help students build critical skills, make professional connections and stand out in your career.
Our hands-on experiences are broad and deep, with many options.
Fieldwork: Observe kinesiology in work settings to inform your scholarship and practice.
Internship: Customized to your interests and career goals, an internship partners you with a local business where you’ll apply classroom learning to real-world solutions. Are you a business interested in becoming a partner? Email Jo Wagner.
Research: Take part in research, learning the scientific process with award-winning faculty. Present your findings at events such as UIC Impact and Research Day and AHS Research Day.
Study abroad: Cultivate your intercultural development by learning how to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds while studying abroad for a week, month or semester!
Undergraduate teaching assistant: Study your course material on a deeper level and share your learning with others. Lead review sessions, assist with hands-on labs or mentor fellow students.
Special projects: Explore different areas of kinesiology by working on faculty-led initiatives, independent study or other projects.
By the time you graduate, you won’t just know kinesiology – you’ll have lived it, strengthening your applications for graduate schools or your career.
