Objectives
This is a two-day, primarily laboratory-based course that also includes didactic content focused on clinical correlates of the relevant anatomy. This course provides an in-depth review of clinically relevant anatomy of the upper extremity and back utilizing active cadaveric dissection by participants as well as demonstration of structures on previously prosected specimens. In addition, the course includes focused clinically-oriented review of anatomy of the UE and/or back through supplementary didactic content. A minimum of three-quarters of the contact time will be spent in the gross anatomy laboratory.
16 Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) will be awarded.

- Audience: The course is designed for clinicians/educators with an overall course objective to review clinically relevant anatomy through a cadaver-based experience.

During this course the student will:
- Participate in dissection of regional anatomy of the upper extremity and back.
- Review clinically relevant anatomy of the upper extremity including joints and associated structures, musculature, and neurovasculature on prosected specimens.
- Review clinically relevant anatomy of the spine and back and associated structures, musculature, and neurovasculature on prosected specimens.
- Apply regional anatomy to select clinical correlates through facilitated group discussion.

Course Director/Instructor
Laura Thorp, PT, PhD, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received her PhD in anatomy from Rush University in 2006 and her physical therapy degree from the University of Scranton, Scranton, PA.
She currently teaches human gross anatomy and neuroanatomy to physical therapy students and has experience teaching anatomy in medical, nursing, physician assistant, and speech and language pathology programs. Her primary research interests are in the field of knee osteoarthritis and curricular innovation in anatomy education. She has received the Brainard award for excellence in teaching from Rush University as well as the Susan K Campbell Award for Academic Teaching Excellence and the Excalibur Award for Teaching Excellence both from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

- Art Sifuentes, MS PT – Regional Director Athletico
Art started out as an athletic trainer graduating with bachelor’s from UIC in 1989 and his Master of Science degree from Illinois State University in 1991. After a working two years in an outpatient clinic and high school setting, he returned to school to obtain his Physical Therapy degree from Rosalyn Franklin University (Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School). Art joined Athletico in 1996, eventually advancing to a Regional Director role. Art works with the Athletico facilities on the far Northside, of the city of Chicago. Art has rotated through the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and has traveled on medical humanitarian missions on several occasions with Operation Walk Chicago – an organization that provides free hip and knee replacements surgeries for underserved communities, in third world countries. Most recently, Art has been enjoying the opportunity to assist at UIC, in the anatomy lab.
- Karim Elalfy, PT, MA – Rush University
Karim Elalfy, PT, MA, is a licensed physical therapist in both Illinois and New York state with broad experience in musculoskeletal and post-surgical conditions. He completed his physical therapy training in 2007 at Cairo University hospitals in Egypt. He subsequently received his Master of Art in Pathokinesiology at New York University. Karim has experience with anatomic dissection and teaching for both DPT students and medical students. He is currently an Instructor in the department of Anatomy at Rush University, teaching anatomy in the medical college curriculum.
