Requirements vary by how you’re applying. Review the category that fits you below.
Am I a first-year applicant, and what do I need?
You’re considered a first-year applicant if you’re applying while still in high school or have graduated from high school but haven’t yet attended college. You must meet the general UIC entrance requirements.
Am I a transfer applicant, and what do I need?
You’re considered a transfer applicant if you’ve earned 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) or more at another college.
- At least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) but no more than 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) from a two-year college or university
- Minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)

Can I transfer from another UIC program?
Yes. We welcome transfer students from all UIC programs. If you’re currently a freshman or sophomore at UIC, you can apply as an intercollege transfer.
- At least one completed semester of coursework at UIC
- Minimum UIC GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), including transfer credit from other institutions
- Good academic standing
Deadline: Applications are reviewed once grades are posted at the end of the semester. You’ll be emailed a decision approximately two weeks after your grades are posted.

What do international applicants need?
If English isn’t your native language, you’ll need to submit TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or PTE Academic scores, unless you qualify for an exemption. Review UIC’s International Requirements to see if this applies to you.
Scores must be submitted to UIC directly using the institutional code 1851.
- TOEFL iBT: minimum total score of 80
- IELTS Academic: minimum overall score of 6.5
- PTE Academic: minimum overall score of 54
Scores below these minimums don’t automatically disqualify your application.

Take this time before you apply to review the funding options available to you. UIC has financial aid support for you, no matter what type of student you are—first-year, transfer, or continuing. Last year, nearly two-thirds of all UIC students received grants or scholarships.
Even before you apply, you can fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and include UIC’s school code: 001776. This is the first step in the financial aid process for almost every student. Many scholarships and grants have earlier deadlines than the admission deadline. Get a head start and make sure you don’t miss out on an opportunity.
What to expect after you apply
You can check the status of your admissions application online at any time and see whether all your items are correct and complete.
When you’ll hear from us
- First-year applicants: October–March
- Transfer applicants (spring term): September–December
- Transfer applicants (fall term): February–May
- UIC intercollege transfer applicants: 10–14 business days after submitting your application
After a decision has been made
Once Admissions enters a decision, the application portal is updated and an official decision letter is mailed.
